Murder, She Wrote Questions

Here are a few musings for anyone familiar with the easily-solved mystery shows featuring Angela Landsbury that dominated my family’s Sunday night TV-watching.

murdershewrote.jpg1. Why are people friends with Jessica Fletcher? I can understand old friendships, but everywhere she goes, her buddies either die, kill someone, or know someone who dies. Think I’d stay away. “Oh, Jessica! Yes, it’s nice to hear from you again. No, no I’ll be out of town that month. And that month… Yeah, I’m travelling a lot next year too.”

2. Why doesn’t anyone kill Jessica? If I were a murderer and Ms. Fletcher was in the vicinity, I’d bump her off first and then kill whomever I am really out for. Which leads me to my next question…

3. If someone were to kill Jessica, who would solve the crime? I always thought that the perfect series finale would be Jessica’s murder that no one could solve. The policemen at Cabot Cove would stand over her corpse and ponder awhile. Then:

“Well, what do we do now?”

“I dunno.”

“I mean, we can’t very well ask her…”

“No. No, we can’t.”

“Hmm. Do you remember anything from Police Academy?”

  1. 1. If I were friends of Jessica Fletcher, at least I know I’d never be convicted of a crime I didn’t commit. I’d likely be accused, of course, but that means I’m probably better off without the victim in my life. And then Jessica would swoop in and vindicate me. Woohoo!

    2. Killing her would have been wise, but I don’t think most killers knew she solved real-life crimes instead of creating fictional ones. And since she was so often traveling or coming to rescue a friend/nephew, her presence may not be anticipated.

    3. I suppose Dennis Stanton could solve the case… but your scenario is much funnier.

  2. I suspect that my strong preference for Matlock won’t be warmly welcomed on this post (or most other places in the world), so I’ll simply offer up these two Murder, She Wrote themed links.

  3. Wow, this was great. One of the funniest things I’ve read in a while. Good job!

  4. Jason, that board game looks sweet.

I have no faith in Dennis Stanton, JL. That guy couldn’t solve a mystery if the body had a signed confession in the front pocket. Why else would Jessica be needed? Your point about the anonymity of Fletcher is probably right on, though; I hadn’t thought of that.

  5. I don’t know if you had your sound on when you viewed the link, but that reggae Murder, She Wrote song has been stuck in my head all day.

  6. The picture you posted was perfect…it seems like she was always wandering around with a flashlight! Do you remember the classic “I just figured out the case” look she’d get on her face? It was always sort of an awkward jolting motion…
